A Christmas Crisis?

Americans spend $450,000,000,000, in just thirty days, for the Christmas holiday.  And moneysupermarket.com claims that four out of five people will unwrap presents they neither want, or need. 

We are in a Christmas crisis.  Perhaps there is value in this post, then:

With just three weeks till Christmas, the Red Bull-infused phase of the holiday shopping season is upon us. If recent history is any guide, the month of December alone—with just 8 percent of the year’s shopping days—will bring 23 percent of the year’s sales at jewelry stores, 16 percent at department stores, and 15 percent at electronics stores. U.S. December retail sales can be expected to exceed sales in other months by $65 billion. Finally, some good news for the economy. Or maybe not.

Normally—during the 11 non-December months of the year—I’ll spend $50 on something only if it’s worth at least $50 to me. Typically, measures of spending provide a lower-bound on the value of the satisfaction that buyers expect to reap from their purchases. While some of our own purchases ultimately disappoint, we generally buy well for ourselves, so using spending as a barometer of consumer satisfaction makes sense. Spending on gifts is different. When I set out to spend $50 on you, I operate at a significant disadvantage. I’m not certain about what you have or what you want, so when I spend $50 on a gift, I may buy something worth nothing to you. There’s no guarantee that consumer satisfaction meets, exceeds, or even comes close to the amount spent on the gift.

How much satisfaction do we purchase with the $65 billion worth of stuff we put under the tree? Over the past 15 years, I’ve done a lot of surveys asking gift recipients about the items they’ve received: Who bought it? What did the buyer pay? What’s the most you would have been willing to pay for it? Based on these surveys, I’ve concluded that we value items we receive as gifts 20 percent less, per dollar spent, than items we buy for ourselves. Given the $65 billion in U.S. holiday spending per year, that means we get $13 billion less in satisfaction than we would receive if we spent that money the usual way—carefully, on ourselves. Americans celebrate the holidays with an orgy of value destruction. Worldwide, the waste is almost twice as large.

But doesn’t this analysis ignore the joy of giving? you ask. Can’t that joy make up for the inefficiency of gift giving? Let’s consider an example. Your Aunt Mildred buys you a $50 sweater. You don’t hate it, but you don’t love it, either. In all likelihood, you’d have bought it for yourself only if it was a steal—let’s say you’d have been willing to pay no more than $30 for it. So far, her gift appears to destroy value. But suppose Mildred got joy in giving the gift, and while it would be hard to do so with any precision, let’s suppose we can attach a dollar value to Mildred’s joy. For the sake of discussion, let’s say it’s another $30. That would bring the total benefit of the transaction to $60, $10 more than its cost. But wait: If Aunt Mildred got the same joy from giving you a sweater you actually wanted—worth its $50 price tag to you—then the transaction could have created $80 in value. Relative to this, the bad gift misses out on $20 worth of satisfaction. So even accounting for the joy of giving, our gift-giving is inefficient. Of course, it’s also possible that Mildred enjoys giving you only sweaters you do not like, but if so, then Mildred is a sadist. And I doubt that sadism motivates the vast lot of gift giving.

It’s bad enough that we buy a lot of stuff that no one wants. It turns out we buy it using money we don’t yet have. It wasn’t always this way. In the 1930s, almost 10 percent of Christmas spending was financed with money squirreled away into Christmas clubs—bank accounts paying little interest but helping consumers save for the holiday. Participants promised to contribute weekly, frequently as little as $0.25 at a time. These accounts were popular because they helped even unsophisticated consumers—many of whom didn’t have another bank account—avoid the temptation to fritter their money away. Since 1970, by contrast, the explosive growth in consumer credit has had the opposite effect, helping consumers fall prey to their lack of self-control when it comes to borrowing. In recent years, one-third of holiday spending is still not paid off two months after Christmas.

Hold on there! Isn’t spending good for the economy? The economy consists of buyers and sellers. In normal transactions, the seller gets a price exceeding his cost and therefore makes some profit, while the buyer gets an item she values at or above its price (in which case the buyer receives some surplus). A well-functioning market maximizes the joint surplus experienced by sellers and buyers. With gift giving, the seller still gets his profit, but the ultimate consumer (the gift recipient) gets an item that produces less satisfaction than an equal amount of spending would have led to if she had purchased an item for herself. So, is holiday spending good for the economy? It’s good for sellers, but it’s not sufficiently good at producing satisfaction for the ultimate consumers. And most of us are, after all, consumers rather than sellers.

Second, while cash is in principle an appealing gift, as it allows the recipient to choose something she actually wants, it’s considered tacky in our culture. Gift cards are probably the next best thing, although you need to be careful about fees and about losing them. Gift cards would be even better if their unspent balances—10 percent of spending by some accounts—went automatically to charity after a few years. With about $80 billion in annual gift card sales, there’s $8 billion at stake here.

OK, Professor Scrooge, I can’t really just not give anyone gifts—do you have any advice for how to give better gifts? First off, keep giving gifts to people you know well and see often, especially kids. When you know your recipients’ wants and needs, your gifts are far less likely to destroy value. Gifts from givers in daily or weekly contact are, on average, about 10 percent more satisfying, per dollar spent, than those from givers in only monthly or yearly contact. In fact, the right gift can, in some circumstances, be even more satisfying than what the recipient would have done with cash. While textbook economics views people as fully aware of all the things they might like to buy, in reality our friends sometimes know about things we’d like before we learn of them. In those situations, well-chosen gifts can allow us to enjoy wonderful items that we did not know existed.

Finally, gifts to charity on behalf of recipients deserve a look. Such gifts can allow your friends and family to experience a luxury they probably can’t usually afford. While luxury evokes images of jewelry and fancy chocolates, if you look at household spending data, one of the clearest luxuries—that is, an item whose share of expenditure rises with income—is charitable giving. So charity gift cards (offered by Charity Navigator or TisBest.org), which allow recipients to choose which charity gets the money, make it possible for recipients to act like rich guys, while transferring resources to high-value uses. Admittedly, these would be terrible gifts for 11-year-old boys, but they may be an ideal way to fulfill your giving obligations with other adults. Like it or not, we are about to go on our annual holiday spending sprees. That spending can be a force for waste or a force for good. Think twice before you put that sweater on your Visa.

Blue

Morpheus holds out his hands, with two pills.  One blue.  The other red.  His sunglasses cannot hide his smile, his look, as he knows his offer to Neo would not be rejected.  Lightning screams with violent cracks, and flashes through the curtained windows, and the glass of water on the table beckons.

Morpheus then speaks.  “This is your last chance.  After this, there is no turning back.  You take the blue pill — the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.  You take the red pill — you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.”

I think of that quote often.  I wrote a discussion guide for our small group leaders a couple of weeks ago about our online identities, and the more I read, and researched, the more alarmed I became.    

The story was about the decline of privacy through the increasing wave of the digital world, as it sweeps over our lives.   An entire American generation has taken the blue pill, and has become part of a stream of information, in a cyber world, that is never-ending, chosing to remain a part of what could very well be called the matrix.

Every data, every text, every tweet, every status update, every email, every uploaded picture or video, is now cemented in the vaults of servers, from individual IP addresses.

Every bit of digital information is thought-based, though.  Everything uploaded has to be premeditated, which means even the awful things we put online must undergo some thought process.  Stories emerge constantly of people regretting their online posts.  And I think more and more people will, one day, wish they had taken the red pill.  Because as our world grows more and more comfortable with avatars and tweets, in the chance that we could have greater connections with others through a digital world, we are also growing more and more disconnected.  Life is now lived on a computer screen, with children spending, on average, six hours in front of some kind of screen every day.

So when I read this article, all of these thoughts washed around in my head.  There is a trend now, of people unplugging, or going offline, or, in essence, taking the red pill, and are wanting to disconnect from this strange world of keyboards and screens and updates. 

Be warned, though.  The story is a little bizarre, but the intent is interesting. 

‘Anti-social network’ claims to be a Facebook killer app

Facebook makes you despair? Social networking makes you want to end it all? You may be ready for online ritual suicide with the aid of a new website that helps you kill your virtual identity.

“Impress your friends, disconnect yourself,” is the slogan on www.seppukoo.com, a site that aims to subvert Facebook by offering its millions of users a glorious end and a memorial page to match.

“Rather than fall into the hands of their enemies, ancient Japanese samurai preferred to die with honour, voluntarily plunging a sword into the abdomen and moving it left to right in a slicing motion,” the site notes.

This form of ritual suicide was known as “seppuku.”

“As the seppuku restores the samurai’s honour as a warrior, seppukoo.com deals with the liberation of the digital body,” the site says.

Today the enemy is not other bands of noble warriors but corporate media who use viral marketing to make huge profits by connecting people across the globe.

“Seppukoo playfully attempts to subvert this mechanism by disconnecting people from each other and transforming the individual suicide experience into an exciting ’social’ experience.”

The site, which uses its own viral marketing strategy to lure in disgruntled social networkers, is part of a protest wave that sees Facebook as a potentially dangerous entity beholden to corporate interests. 

It offers ritual suicide for Facebook users in five easy steps.

Willing victims must first log in to seppukoo.com by typing in the same information they use to go on to their Facebook profile. 

They then choose one of several memorial RIP page templates before writing their last words, which the site promises to send to all their Facebook friends when they have taken the final step.

Once the user has made that fatal final click, his or her Facebook profile is deactivated.

But in what might be seen as a bit of a cheat, virtual life goes on after the ritual suicide.

It comes in the form of testimonials friends can write on the memorial page or by rising in the seppukoo ranks by scoring points with every former Facebook friend who follows your lead and commits hara-kari.

The top scorer in that game is currently a blonde woman who uses the name Simona Lodi and who passed into the post-Facebook world on November 5. 

But seppukoo.com has some way to go before it attracts anything near the more than 300 million users Facebook currently boasts. On Wednesday it pulled in only half a dozen Facebookers ready to end it all.

Its owners — whose website says are an “imaginary art-group from Italy” — told AFP by email that over 15,000 people had done the deed and over 350,000 Facebook users had received an invite to follow suit.

Facebook did not immediately reply when contacted by AFP to ask if it saw seppukoo.com as a threat and if it planned any action to block it.

To reinforce the tongue-in-cheek approach of seppukoo.com, the group’s art director — who uses the name Guy McMusker — replied when asked if he was a Facebook user: “Of course. We’re not Luddites. We’re incoherent.

The group is called “Linking The Invisible”‘ and its website says it is made up of media artists Clemente Pestelli and Gionatan Quintini whose work explores “the invisible links between the infosphere, neural synapsis, and real life.”

“Seppukoo admits that it is in reality a social networking group but seeks to distinguish itself from Facebook by noting that it will store no data and its server will not sell data to any third party.

“If you’ve trusted a merciless company (Facebook) until now, we hope you can also trust an imaginary artist group,” it says. McMusker said the site was not set up with a view to making money.

The RIP memorial page it offers Facebook dissidents could easily be mistaken for a real memorial for a real deceased person. But McMusker rejected suggestions it was in bad taste and said that no-one was likely to be upset.

“Just take it easy,” he wrote.

In the real world, suicide is obviously a one-way trip. But in the virtual world even a would-be subversive site like seppukoo.com cannot prevent your resurrection.

If you realise that leaving Facebook was a mistake, all you have to do is log back on again and your profile is instantly restored.

Eventually, real life was too heavy of a burden for Cypher, and in the movie, The Matrix, he killed and sabotaged to find his way back to the land of make-believe.  His preference for the online world was no match for the truth of his situation.  For us, our online world is in a steady merge with reality.  But that is a reality that should all scare us.

For we become beholden to the machine, enslaved by the fake world of a light blue aura that shines into our eyes in the middle of the night, from a flat screen, or a handheld phone. 

So many people want genuine community, that the flat buzz of a monitor is too enticing, and offers community, though skewed as it is.  Because if people are devaluing real interaction, then all of our institutions which offer genuine community are headed for a change we may not want.

Should

Mainstream music is certainly manufactured for immediate success and quick remembrance.

And since the world is contemplating the legacy of Michael Jackson, and in the minutia of musical influence, I found the following article somewhat refreshing.

In my ministry to students, I have found that a brave few are listening to a wide variety of unknown or undiscovered artists — artists who have rejected the mainstream version of creativity, and have launched albums with unique sounds, though maybe only enjoyable by a select few.  Any artist with the courage to break the status quo and find a unique sound with a unique following is worth a listen.  I have a few favorite artists like this myself.

But that certainly proves the point that we like our music, and we like our music our way.  It’s such a powerful, powerful medium, but …

according to this article, it should have been much, much better …

“Five Singers Who Ruined Pop Music”

Sure, he could sound like John Lennon on one album and Luther Vandross on the next. But that was the problem with David Bowie — in his heyday he seemed more of a theatrical chameleon who tried on personas than an impassioned rock singer. Bowie’s restless experimentalism allowed him to pull off being coolly distant and affected. Sadly, others copped his affectations without his intelligent approach. For a while in the 1980s, it seemed as if nearly every singer drew more from Bowie’s European theater tradition of singing than the tradition of rock singing itself (which came from R&B and gospel sources). Those who succumbed to Bowie-itis included everyone from Ric Ocasek of the Cars to David Byrne of Talking Heads to Robert Palmer to even Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. In short, anytime anyone tries on a vocal persona instead of singing from the heart, they’re channeling the Thin White Duke.

Whitney Houston

In the second verse of her second hit single, “Saving All My Love for You,”Whitney Houston pronounces the word “cry” as “cu-ry.” That was just the beginning of her habit of adding extra syllables to words and over-the-top frills to songs — embellishments she seemed to add to show off her voice, not to put the song across better. Yes, Houston was a dazzling singer when she emerged, but younger female singers picked up on the most bombastic elements of her style, thinking that was what you needed to be a great vocalist. So along came Taylor Dayne, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Celine Dion and almost any “soulful” female singer who ever made audience’s ears bleed on “American Idol.” A new style of vocalizing emerged, and it even got a name: oversinging. Over the years oversinging has become an unintentional parody of the R&B singing from which it descended. All of the above singers should have gone back and studied Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, two brilliant artists who knew what you leave out of a song can be as important as what you put in.

Jim Morrison

It makes people uncomfortable when you mention that Morrison often took vocal cues from an old school pop artist like Frank Sinatra. But that seems to be where the late lead singer of the Doors got his croon from. The difference was, Morrison wasn’t wrapping his baritone around jazz standards by Cole Porter or George Gershwin — he was singing rock lyrics with poetic pretensions and more simplistic chords. Even though Morrison could pull this off without sounding idiotic (most of the time), others couldn’t. What followed Morrison was a succession of singers whose bellowing brought to rock music an annoying self-importance it had never had. The main offenders are the obvious ones, like Eddie Vedder, Scott Stapp and Michael Hutchence. But you also have to throw in almost every post-punk singer that emerged from the U.K. and employed a deep voice to sound “profound” (we’re looking at you, Dave Gahan). Traces of Morrison’s pompous leanings can also be heard in singers as wide-ranging as Bono, Chad Kroeger and Bob Geldof.

Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul has the opposite problem of Whitney Houston. Where Houston could sing too well for her own good, Abdul could hardly sing at all, and even got sued by R&B singer Yvette Marine, who claimed she shared some of the lead vocals on Abdul’s debut album “Forever Your Girl” (Marine lost the case, but careful headphone listening reveals Abdul’s vocals were bolstered by someone). What Abdul could do well was dance and look good, which was starting to matter more and more on MTV around the time she emerged in 1989. And so the door was opened for anyone who could make Chipmunk-like sounds but looked hot doing so. Britney Spears, P. Diddy, the Pussycat Dolls, Kanye West and Ashlee Simpson have walked through that door and earned millions, as have the other scads of singers who rely on Auto-Tune to carry a tune. The irony of all this, of course, is that Abdul herself could likely never have qualified to be a contestant on “American Idol,” the very show on which she now serves as a talent judge.

Steve Marriott

Marriott was the powerhouse lead vocalist of the super-cool U.K. mod band the Small Faces and arena rockers Humble Pie. As a singer, the guy couldn’t be topped — his power and versatility were amazingand he virtually always sounded engaged (if not possessed). But Marriott was also the first male vocalist in rock to regularly sing in a very high register in a full, non-falsetto voice. According to Jimmy Page, Marriott was the original choice for Led Zeppelin’s lead singer. And here’s where he became a bad influence. Marriott led to Robert Plant, Plant led to Geddy Lee of Rush and Steve Perry of Journey and all of a sudden there were scores of long haired guy singers who picked up on Marriott’s screeching but left out his soulfulness. Zeppelin, Rush, Triumph and (sometimes) Journey are all great to listen to separately, but the cumulative effect of all these wailing voices on the radio back in the day made rock music sound, well, sort of silly. It also probably drove people to punk rock, where the singer sounded more down to Earth.

Feast

In early October, I, with a friend, had the opportunity to attend a worship conference in Nashville.

After an afternoon of travel, we entered into the lobby, full of people with coffee cups in hand, standing and networking and talking and laughing and wondering. There were book tables and, in the lobby, a baptistery, with a large glass window which viewed the large courtyard to the back of the campus.

As the sanctuary doors opened, we walked inside and found the auditorium which, with pews, could seat well over two thousand peoples, but instead of pews or chairs, it was filled with tables and chairs, and the thousand or so which came to the conference found their places and waited.

The worship leaders took the stage, an a capella group, with around a dozen singers, and the first note of the first song was angelic. The room erupted into praise from ministers and worship leaders eager to be filled during a worship assembly, a stark departure from spending Mondays virtually emptied from leading hundreds in worship on Sundays. I was one of those people, and found myself in a room of raw emotions and needful people, and could not sing, for my voice weakened, and my emotions softened, and the worship experience, though very subtle without musicians or bands or instruments, was simply remarkable, and easily the most transforming moment of worship I have ever attended.

The night of worship was such a feast for the soul. Great worship songs led into an emotive and energetic and intelligent speaker, which then gave way to another time of worship. That led to a video montage of several movie clips, which had most of us laughing, which then gave way to another moment of speaking. We then engaged into a community activity with those sitting around our table, and then were led again in a moment of worship. The two hour event moved fast, and was a true sensory feast. At the conclusion of the event, I was simply overwhelmed.

And it wasn’t because the quality of the worship leaders or the speakers was any greater than what I see, and in which I participate, every Sunday. It was just the careful and simple planning to ensure that you can connect with God in every single sensory way, from singing to listening to writing to watching to talking.

Traditional churches find this thought very revolutionary, with static schedules of worship. But a teacher in a classroom of second graders understands that if you want students to learn, and you want your learning environment to be a true learning experience, you need to ensure that your students can learn in a variety of ways, by surrounding them with varying angles of the same message.

Yesterday, in the church where I worship and work and lead, was a day very similar to the conference described above. The worship schedule included a brief moment of worship, then a presentation, followed by a longer period of singing. Our church then shared communion, and, before the offering, watched another presentation. We prayed for those who have been saved, and then heard a message on giving. After, we witnessed a baptism of one of our students, but the comments made by her father were just overwhelming and moving. I saw one of our church members at lunch, and he told me that the morning was just great — and that we only made him cry three times.

He is not alone. Great moments of humility typically follow genuine encounters with God. Isaiah, the prophet, could not speak when he saw the cherubim of God, and heard His voice. The face of Moses glowed after speaking with God on a mountain, but that was well after God approached him in a bush glowing with fire, but never quite burned. Elijah heard God in a whisper. Peter and Andrew and James and John, and others, saw God as a human, and watched him heal the withered legs of a crippled man. And they were soon given the same power to heal.

Moreover, all of those stories attest to the fact that God has no one favored way of approaching humanity, but, in fact, approaches us in a variety of ways, because we have varied ways of sensing and feeling and understanding. I believe we have every right, and every capability, to find and worship God with every emotive response we possess, for we are created that way.

We again tested this idea last night, when we hosted a more contemporary worship event, targeted for teenagers, with a sensory worship environment, that included, of all things, a painter, painting a scene from the crucifixion. With the lights dimmed, the schedule was again broken into parts, which alternated between moments of speaking and singing, and watching. It wasn’t variety, for the sake of variety, but rather, a genuine, honest attempt to reach a new generation of seekers, whose lives are filled with multiple tasks at once. They expect their experiences to be total and complete and surrounding. Others don’t, but find God in new ways when they engage in worship like this.

It was a worship of surrounding, with people finding God in layers of emotions and responses and experiences. It was truly a feast.

Away

Just a week before our annual student retreat, I felt the pains familiar to any organizer.

And then I just looked at all this stuff, and thought it really doesn’t matter, because special and amazing things occur when you are away from home, regardless of preparation.

Almost 200 people joined me in a weekend retreat, to an old camp in the rolling hills of Arkansas, and most of who came were students. The terrain is beautiful and calm. The cabins are old and rustic. And the trails are well-worn throughout the site. A swinging bridge spans a small creek, but affords most of our students a first glimpse into something once quite common. And memories of past times linger around every tree, and every smell.

It was my tenth year to take such a group to this site, and it was my nineteenth year to be there, having used the same site when I was a kid, attending with a different church in an altogether different town. And the place, through the span of my twenty years, has not changed, save a new dining hall.

It’s also a place where many former students, some now in college, and some married, join us again for thirty-six hours, and for me, it’s good to see the mingling. Great connections are made here.

And it’s also a sacred place. Rumored to have been a camp used for workers of the Civilian Conservation Corps, it is now a regular site for fall, winter, and spring retreats, and even hosts a regular summer camp. Holy things happen here frequently, and that little creek, the one you see above, has washed many students, and has birthed them into a life of faith and belief.

I’ve seen, now many times, what happens when you distance yourself from the normal. You are offered a chance to retreat, to escape, to move away from every hindrance and every weight. You are taken from the luxury of technology and asked to sleep in a shivering night, and you cling to the heat from the fire in the middle of the camp. Primitive and basic things take the place of what we now call necessities, and you feel a little like our common ancestors felt, long before the days of electricity. And you find welcomed company in in the community of people who now need to make due with the same basic needs.

I have nothing to offer with these words, except this: George Washington carved his reputation out of gruesome times when the American forces were vastly threatened by a stronger and better funded British force in the year of 1776. And Washington himself was made famous, not so much for his ability to muster the American troops into fighting what could have easily been a losing battle, but rather, because he knew how to retreat. Had he pushed headlong into a battle with those British forces, the war would have ended much sooner, and the United States of America would have had a much different story.

But he knew the value of retreat, of withdrawing, because it is in those moments that you rebuild your broken strength, that you catch your breath, and remember why you are fighting in the first place.

You retreat, you get away, all so you can live to fight another day.

You would think that social networking is a brand new thing.

The phrase, social networking, is new, but maybe not the concept.  But if you say the phrase out loud, and you may want to do so right now, it makes you feel good, almost like you know more than you’re supposed to know.

It is also the phrase most used to describe the Facebook phenomenon.  A recent article reported that Facebook is the number one social network website in the world.  In just a span of twelve months, Facebook added 75 million unique monthly visitors (from 40 million in April, 2007, to 115 million in April, 2008).  Of those 75 million unique visitors, 62 million were from places other than the United States of America.

MySpace, in the same time span, has not grown enough to even chart it’s progress.

Facebook began as a toy for college students, almost a tongue-in-cheek graduation from MySpace.  But, as you may know dear reader, your friend list, if you are on Facebook, includes people outside of that demographic.  It’s rate of growth has outpaced other social networking sites.

And the reasons for its success are almost immediate.  If you have your own Facebook account, you will notice a few things.  One, you were probably asked to join a network, which, according to Facebook, most people do.  Another, is that you are asked a slate of questions about yourself, and you almost feel compelled to answer them accordingly. 

In it’s purest form, Facebook is almost about vanity.  You are telling your own private world, in online terms, what you value, who you like, and even your current mood.  And you are given complete control.  No one in the real world can force anything here. 

Because, as I’ve written before, millions of lives are now lived on computer screens.

I have a theory. 

Facebook has made relationships cool again.  We have taken a phrase, social networking, and made it sound almost technological, and very much inventive, though, at its core, social networking is just a new way to describe relationships.  And Facebook has given us a place to invest in relationships.

And I guess we need that.  The cultural swing of America has gone from small towns to a scattering of friends across this continent, and has placed us in isolated areas, away from family, and away from longtime friends.  The Internet was, for a time, the savior of relationships, with email being the hottest ticket in town.  But that became cumbersome.  So cell phones became the rage.  But rates were too high.  So text messaging followed next in this evolutionary tale.  But we wanted to say more.  So MySpace happened.  But MySpace is a public page, and maybe we don’t want everyone to see what we have to say, and the need for control developed.  So there was a need, and the development of Facebook filled that need.  But it also provided competition for MySpace among those who use each one.  One psychologist even cited research that both users MySpace and Facebook could be seen through socio-economic lenses.

So even relationships, lived online, are now divided among class lines.  Interesting, isn’t it? 

In the end, though, Facebook offered privacy, and controlled access.  And most people seem to like that.  So Facebook is the student who has become the teacher. 

But what holds Facebook together, and makes it work so well, is the accountability that ensures that these relationships survive.

The information in any given profile is checked every time new access is granted to your profile by adding these friends.  And, in turn, whenever you are given access to someones profile, by the unique privilege of being their friend, you can check their information.  And you will ask about something that doesn’t play well.  And you will be asked about something that someone else disputes.  Facebook would not be the most dominant social networking site in the world if accountability wasn’t so accessible, or so necessary.  It is what makes any relationship work.

It would seem, though the lens of technology, that humanity craves a chain of people, where we find ourselves connected somewhere. 

But, of course, it isn’t the first to offer such a place.

The greatest social networking site on the planet is in the lobby of any church.  Try it this Sunday and see.

I found the following statistics in The Journal for Student Ministries this weekend, and thought they were worth sharing. 

(Before you read, I must tell you that the more I read them, the more I felt like a small bit of ice in an ever-growing snowball.  Each stat heaped more evidence of a clutter-filled life upon the previous statistic, and when I finished them, my head hurt from the overwhelming success culture enjoys at garnering the attention of the American teenager.  It’s a little frightening.  And it should be.)

TV

  • TV consumption among teens is up slightly to an average of 11.9 hours a week.
  • Teen boys watch more television than teen girls, averaging about an hour and a half more (13.2 hours a week).
  • For tweens (8 to 1), the average amount of television consumed during a typical week is 12.2 hours, with tween boys watching about 14.5 hours (during the school year).
  • Three of ten guys’ top-five favorites are animated, led by The Family Guy, followed by The Simpsons and South Park.
  • The Office moved up nine slots to the third most popular show among all teen males.
  • Biggest mover for teen girls:  ABC Family’s Greek, which came in tied for eighth.
  • For tween viewers, American Idol is no longer number one; now it’s Hannah Montana.
  • For tween girls, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars moved up four notches to land in the fifth spot.
  • For tween boys, it’s all about SpongeBob and Zack & Cody.  The biggest mover was the ABC comedy The George Lopez Show, which shot up 10 spots to secure the seventh spot.

Internet

  • Teens spend 12.5 hours online while tweens spend only 6.4 hours (typical week during school year).
  • Teens have grown tired of MySpace and have moved on to Facebook in the past couple of months.
  • Only a couple of virtual worlds are on tweens’ radars.
  • The top sites tweens visit — Webkinz among both tween boys and tween girls.  Then Neopets, owned by Viacom’s interactive unit, as well as Nick.com.
  • Club Penguin remains in third place for tween girls and dropped from 11th place to 13th place for tween boys since last summer.
  • AddictingGames is fast becoming the top casual gaming site among all youth.

Entertainment and Pop Culture

  • During a typical month teens seen an average of 1.8 movies (in a movie theater).
  • Tweens see an average of 1.3 per month.
  • Tween attendance is consistent with a year ago, while the average number of movies teens see in a typical month has increased slightly from 1.5 movies a year ago.
  • Most appealing movie genres for teens:  Action/Adventure titles, followed by comedies.
  • Tweens prefer comedies, followed by animated features, then action/adventure.
  • For the third straight year, Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp retains the title as the most popular Hollywood celebrity among teen and tween females.
  • Funny man Adam Sandler is tops among the boys, followed closely by the two Will’s — Smith and Ferrell.
  • The most popular female celebrity among teen girls?  Miley Cyrus, followed by Reese Witherspoon, Keira Knightley, and Amanda Byrnes.
  • The top female celeb among teen boys is Jessica Alba for the second straight year, followed by Miley Cyrus, Ashley Tisdale, and Alicia Keys.

Retail and Shopping

  • During a typical month teens spend an average of $135 across nine product categories.
  • Nearly half of their spending goes towards clothing and accessories.
  • For 16 and 17 year-old teens who have part-time jobs (minimum of 5 hours per week), their spending across the same nine categories jumps sharply to $264 a month, just about double the average among all teens and about 45% higher than the average for all 16 and 17 year-olds.
  • For tweens, it’s all about candy, gum, and games.
  • The most-visited specialty clothing retailer among teen females is Victoria’s Secret, followed closely by Hollister.
  • Teen males visit American Eagle Outfitters more often than any other specialty retailer, followed by Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister.
  • Old Navy, for both tween boys and girls, remains the most shopped at specialty clothing retailer by a considerable margin.

It’s all a little overwhelming, isn’t it?

Write

it’s how the kids do it these days.

and it’s a brand of communication i swore i would never do.

and yet, i do.  i love the english language.  i love the nuances of the language, and i love the way words are put together.  words are powerful, and they are powerful when they are spoken, and they are powerful when they are written.  and since i do both, and do both frequently, i figured that i would never demote the english language to such frivolousness as writing without capital letters.

and then i found facebook.  and since i direct a rather large student ministry, and since most of my students live their lives on facebook, i go where the kids are.  and that’s where they are.  and this is how they communicate.

captions for photographs are written without capital letters.  status updates are written without capital letters.  favorite movies.  favorite songs.  interests.  all of these things are written without ever pressing the shift key on the keyboard. 

and that poor little shift key.  once so important.  once used to start a new thought, or a new sentence, and now it has been left behind, ostracized.  and it is lonely.  now, in this new found mode of communication, where words are never capitalized, the shift key may be used only when SOMEONE IS VERY ANGRY.  and then again, it could be overlooked for the simpler caps lock key. 

writing without capital letters, really, is a way to communicate an attitude.  using all lower caps indicates that what you are saying is not very serious, or that your current mood is one of normalcy.  and it is different than the structured world in which we live, where homework must be written in proper english, and where reports and presentations must be written in strictly professional ways.  it really is a sort of rebellion, and so we decide that with friends and family, and our facebook crowd, we’ll only communicate in the ways we believe we talk, and surely the words we say are never capitalized.  and surely, talk of sports and relationships and movies don’t need such heavy restrictions, such as the usage of capital letters – we can just save all of that for when it is absolutely necessary.

so the little shift key is overlooked. 

but really, how much effort do we expend to press the shift key, anyway? 

wait.  i just used the shift key there.  so it needs to be used when you place a question mark at the end of your sentence.  so, we have found another use.  and an important use.  (even though you need it for parentheses, and apostrophes, in my common experience, neither are used much, and pale in use to the all powerful question mark.)  the shift key’s primary purpose, in this cyber-communication world, then, is it’s need for questions.

and there a lot of questions in this lived-online world.  it’s the normal, back and forth conversation, that usually involves statements and questions.  and when you mostly talk through your keyboard, face-to-face contact becomes tough, and awkward, so we just stick to talking with words that omit all capital letters.

because life is lived on the screens of millions of computers.

we are now seeing the emergence of a new, common, vernacular language.  it is the underground language of the people.  it is the way to communicate to a great amount of people in this particular culture, so much so that if you enter this world, and use that little shift key, you’ll be seen as someone who doesn’t belong, or who doesn’t understand.  and whether you do understand or not is really irrelevant.  it’s that your appearance says otherwise.  and in an attention-deficit world, every edge you have to be relevant you take.  and if that means forsaking the beloved english language for teenage typing, then it must be done. 

because in an online world, appearance is less about clothes, and more about words. 

because words are powerful.  even how you type them.

Ironic

I think we are learning, right now, how we really feel about women in power.

Through the nomination of a woman for the vice-presidency, I believed that I would bear witness to a keen cultural shift, a shift that would move our contemporary society to a more generous acceptance of a woman with great power.  As both a student and teacher of history, that is incredibly fascinating.

I also believed, last Friday, that there was great hope for girls.  As a director of a rather large student ministry, with a rather numerous group of girls, and having girls in my own family, I really believed that the world in which they are growing would give them respect and equal footing.  I thought times were changing.

But how wrong I was.

I still may be sitting on the front row of an historical moment for women.  But those who are first in great movements bear the greatest amount of stress, and Governor Palin is no exception.  All things aside, when looking at this moment in perspective, it makes a little more sense.  She placed herself on the altar of criticism, and she knew full well what was coming.  And she did it, anyway.  She did it, perhaps for several reasons, but also knowing that if this election resulted in victory, she would be the first, perhaps of many.

And, for better or worse, she is partnered in this journey with her daughter, who is soon to be a mother herself.  If anything, the current situation shows the real humanity of both mother and daughter, but by no means does it speak of vulnerability or senselessness.  This young mother-to-be is, in many ways, similar to the girl whose life intersected with Jesus, a girl who was discovered and brought to face a soon and sudden death because of her adultery, until those who would deliver the blows were confronted with their own selfish greed and morality.  And those very accusers have spawned their own ancestry.

All of that being said, then, these two ladies are in a unique situation to do things on behalf of women that need to be done. 

Because yesterday, Australia held it’s first-ever Stiletto Sprint, encouraging women to join in a race, wearing stiletto heels, also breaking a world record for the greatest amount of people to enter such a race.  There was a monetary prize, along with a golden pair of high heels.

And I, for one, have seen, and been part, of meaningless games and activities, all in the name of good fun and fellowship.  But I also think that, in the context of Sarah Palin, the timing of this race in Australia seems a bit ironic.  We, in a modern society, should be lauding the accomplishments of a renaissance woman, for once, who can have a family, run a government, and gain tremendous respect throughout.  But, instead, we ask women to run a race wearing high heels. 

Maybe I am reading too much into this.  And maybe I’ll be proven to be a bit off-center.  But I am offended, not because of the Australian race, and not even because of the explicit criticism of Sarah Palin, but because we have not entirely come to expect, deserve, and appreciate more. 

And that is what is most disappointing.

Together

I’ve returned from an exhausting week.

To be sure, though, there are many more worse ways to spend a week, so do not take the previous comment as grumbling.  I am a tremendously blessed man.

It was my fifteenth year at this particular summer camp, six as a camper, then a few years without going, and returning nine years ago, taking students of my own.  After all of that time, the memories are now jumbled.  Last night I forced myself to think about a particular experience four years ago, and silently marveled at how much has changed since then.

A few things are much different.  After a few summers of struggling to mesh our students with the students of the inner city church we sponsor, this was the first, true, summer experience where an outsider would have believed that all of our students attend the same church.  It is validation.  God wants us all together.  There is no distinction with him, and if we are to be a true ministry, even a true church, then distinctions should not exist.  It was a good thing.

But not the only success.  Students recommitted themselves to living lives of faith.  Students from different schools, and different social circles, spent the week together.  New students became introduced to a much larger world of youth ministry, with experiences in worship with over a thousand other students who believe in Jesus. 

This post is certainly nothing philosophical.  It probably has little depth, and probably won’t enlighten or enlarge your understanding of life.  But it is important enough to note that we are teaching, and we are mentoring, and we are praying that weeks like this are great investments in the lives of students.
